Hi, am new to the board and to wargaming at all, I have been playing board games for couple of months and would like to expand into wargaming.I found Gruntz and got intrigued, it seems cheaper than the rest and I like sci-fi. I got the pdf but there is not much about army building just how to build a unit, it just says that usual army consist of 1 commander, 6 gruntz, 3 specialists, 2 apc's, 4 tanks, 2 mechs, 2 cavalry, and artilery. I would need some help with designing my first army. So lets get started. First of all I bought some figures even before I read the rules, and ended up with all tracked and wheeled units (they looked better all vehicles are by old crow models, and they are awesome. ) so I got less mobility that I would expect, with all that grav possibilities my army will be preety static, and I could be out manouvered easily. UPDATED, CHECK MY NEXT POST

You could try ordering some 6 mm turrets to use as your extra machine guns. As far as the helicopter gunship goes I'd compare tank vs APC and see how the soak, hit points etc vary for similar weights of vehicle. Then you can fudge the VTOL rules in the same direction.

Looks good to me. Good to know the Trojan comes with both missile and mg turret.

I have played my first game, with an army made by a friend, 300 points each and it took me a long time to get known with the rules, so I think I'll make a 300 points army, and then expand when I'll learn more about it. (we havent used neither artillery, mechs or that awesome jetfighter) here is a pic of both armies, ARC on the left and hammer slammers on the right. And I got inspired to push for making my own. It is my first project ever so there were some hickups, with glueing mainly, and I still havent decided on painting scheme. Can't paint them green, cause thats what my friends got. If you got any funky idea please share it with me. I would love to make them nice looking, but got no experience. I will make flags for commanders will be easily recognizable, but have no idea what to put on them. Some kind of emblems i gues. I had to convert two units to fit into the rules, It went better than I expected, and I managed to pin the parts so hopefuly they won't fall appart when I'll pick them up... hopefully So in my 299 points I've got: Commander with Medium plasma and a jump pack, In an assault power armour (20 hit points). cost me 26 (you divide the total by 2 right?) Also he's carrying squads attachments weapon, is that correct? and his personal guard of elite powered armour drop troopers, with plasma rifles, and jump packs as well, plus 2 attachments with missile launchers. All of them got powered fist able to crush opponents nuts ;D cost me about 19 for a squad and 12 for a attachment so 35 points all together. And their ride, yeah babe, I am waiting for fly thru McDonnalds now. Its a assault vtol only to hold my commander and his men (had to be assault cause power armours take up 2 slots, do you think its big enough?) 37 points. Two squads of grunts, cannon fooders with either RPG or Gatlin gun they will have light them up perk, and I will have a question about it later. cost me like 12 for a squad and 8 for attachment, sooooo +40. One APC, medium one nothing special, no alloy rims or turbo charger 28 points. Two medium tanks with slug cannon and missiles. 45 points each. And here is the question. Once a enemy unit has been painted, can I shoot missiles without LOS to it? And now my worse nightmare... VTOL Gunship. I have asked you about it last time, and trying to do something with it. I'll give you all stats for it because I don't know if this is correct. There is no option for Air Gunships so... please, help Medium, DMG=19, SOAK=16, RAM=10, GUARD=13 SPEED 13, skill of 5 1 main weapon, missiles, and 1 anti infantry, gatlin gun. cost 43 points. Do you think its correct? . Can it shoot painted enemies without LOS? BTW. How did you make your cards for them? Thank you for reading, leave some comments, what would you do next. How to paint them or anything realy.

Wow amazing. Not only are you using 5pence pieces but you also have the same basing techique! Nice use of drill bits there. Some excellent small conversions.

Thanks, I learnt from You, and got the same supplies. If not your vids I doubt I would achive it. Yeah I like the drill bits as well, had problem with glueing those parts together, so I had to pin them, and then I got that crazy idea to use the drill bits as a flag posts I cant wait when I'll have time to paint them, I would do it this sunday but the bases were drying slowly I just hope paintjob will go easier than assembly, and be up to my expectations. So far I had great fun doing that, I am starting to like wargaming.

Looks like your army should be pretty nice when you get it done. Yeah, those videos are great. Lots of good ideas. I am now using the wet palette.
Thanks,
John

I like the look of those Arc Troopers. Seeing them grouped together makes me wonder why I didn't pay much attention to them before.
I assume these GZG VTOL's come with flightstand?
And goodluck with painting. I'm now painting miniatures for a year now and still experience a steep learning curve. Seeing others talking about and presenting their techniques is really helpfull.

Unfortunately there was no stand included, I bought some m6 washers of 50mm diameter (6mm hole) and cheap gw stands, chopped bottom part off, so only slot remained. Then I glued it to washers and strengthened with some green stuff, for basing I used Windsor and Newton lava texturing gel with some sand, and added some rocks, just like Robin did.
The more I think about painting and more I watch people do it, more I become concerned about how it gonna come out, so I stopped doing that, and will just paint them when I'll have time to do it and hope for best.
I haven't decided on colours and pattern yet.

Thats a great Idea to base them after painting, havent thought about it before, Thanks. I have read before somewhere that dettol stripps paint. I am not that much worried, just those minis are so tiny, and I would realy want them to look nice, but nothing bad will happen if they dont. I have painted a test miniature already but its 28mm, (got cought in a photo on my first post ;D) just to try my skills, and its not bad (took me like 6 hours). I watched dozens of tutorials by now, but by watching I won't learn anything, and they are showing loads of techniques I am not ready to use yet. You probably wont notice too much shading on such a small miniatures anyway so maybe i'll use high contrast colours, so the miniature stands out on the table. Got lesson about complimentary colours and picked red as a base (compliments green), and black... I am gonna have green battlemat. My head is gonna explode soon, from watching all this stuff thats why I said I am not watching anything anymore, Just got to sit down and paint, but have no time atm. maybe I'll paint them this weekend. Luckily I got today an airbrush, cheap one for 15 quid 0.3 nozzle, mainly for priming because I had spray primer, and when I tried to prime figure it came dusty and don't realy know how to use it for good results, and got compressor for 35 few days ago, all from ebay and I am quite happy with it, made a test today, pressure is not the greatest but might be enough. Its called atlantis pt350, was looking for one with a membraine, not a piston, so there are no problems with overheating, water condensation, and its so quiet... Will use blue-tack, or templates to create a pattern. Slowly getting all the supplies I need

Yeah, I guess so ;D totaly posessed, I got another idea because of Robin, He showed me that awesome VTOL www.gruntz.biz/2010/11/hellhound-with-15mm.html and because vtols are main part of my army, I decided to modify mine "Roach". I'll try to use existing parts. I had to paint that guy first for Catan ;D check this robber !!! Hilarious (Papa Loco from Malifaux range) Love green stuff. Boy... why haven't I found about it earlier?

Today I am trying to finish my vtol (have enough of this modelling), have been working with it for about 3 days, just put last layer of green stuff where I found rough edges, and holes, and will smooth it out, and its ready to paint. It's been harder than I thought to make it, and when I actualy chopped the cockpit in half I thought I just broke a miniature, but I have managed it in degree, hope final results will be worth my effort. I remade the cockpit, added some air inlets to make it a bit bulkier, and put some cannons on the wings. It is not glued yet, cause I think it will be easier for painting so sorry for blue tack and low quality photos. If anybody could suggest stats for it as a heavy gunship, I would appreciate, I havent decided if those cannons can be projectile? recoil would make it shoot impossible, so it would have to be some kind of plasma or laser cannons. Because of this I haven't painted all my figures just one squad, and its terrible
