What gets you in the mood to game/hobby hands down, 100% of the time?

Primarily a strong desire to collect small objects, paint and display them in a nice way, coupled with an even stronger desire to not just leave them on a shelf. Then there is an undertone of wanting to avoid mainstream gaming and tap into memories of more esoteric sci-fi books. That is my motivation I think. Ultimately it is a distraction because I know the time could be better spent educating myself to improve other aspects of my life but miniatures drag me back.
If was looking for the motivations which suddenly grab all my thoughts to play NOW. it would be my imagination shooting ideas around my brain about potential encounter stories, with a thought about how it would look on the table. The collectors mindset and the way the miniatures look is a big part of the appeal though. I always want to get the terrain and miniatures right and then turn it into a game on a table - not just a pretty looking thing for display.
So I think the trigger is a visual recreation of a moment of thought about something I might have read or scene in a film. Then I usually want to see some friends to roll dice.

Typically I get the bug for the hobby after I watch a really good sci-fi movie. Or, heck, any movie if it involves a large scale war that you get to see. Also, seeing certain movies inspire me to start/grow on some of the armies I have. I have a very Gigar Alienesque army, and I want to start Non-Human District 9 one as well, purely because I want to see an army of those aliens on a battlefield. It's a perk that I get to paint them up however I please.
There are other things that sometimes get me in the mood to game, paint or model, but they aren't always 100%. For example, some books have inspired me, and some random images, or awesome works of art have done it too. Sometimes just seeing someone else into the hobby do a video on Youtube is enough. Sometimes just seeing a new model come out inspires me.

Then there is an undertone of wanting to avoid mainstream gaming and tap into memories of more esoteric sci-fi books. That is my motivation I think. I'll echo that. To create a really great shared experience -to play a fun game with my buddies- is the goal. Making the toys and the terrain is just part of laying the table, the game is what's on the menu. If I had to choose one or two prime-inspirations, I would go with Heavy Metal & Metal Hurlant magazines, circa 1979-1981 and anything by Iain M. Banks. Ultimately it is a distraction because I know the time could be better spent educating myself to improve other aspects of my life but miniatures drag me back. Our hobby can be a generous, multi-disciplinary pursuit. Improving your creative ability is always valid. Gaming is social. Time spent with good friends is simply the best, and I've made more and better friends through decades of gaming than I have in the years I spent in my field of 'expertise'.

For me, it's space battles. I love space battles as much as I love Mecha warfare. When I'm painting I'll often turn netflix to a good star trek episode that has such battles, or Battlestar Galactica, or something Star Wars that doesn't involve the word 'episode' followed by the numbers 1, 2, or 3. This all really gets me in the hobby mood.
For actually war gaming, Starship Troopers (original) really puts me in a good place too as it contains a little of everything. Big space sequences, lots of infantry combat, killing of alien hordes. What's not to love?

Ultimately it is a distraction because I know the time could be better spent educating myself to improve other aspects of my life but miniatures drag me back. Time spent with good friends is simply the best, and I've made more and better friends through decades of gaming than I have in the years I spent in my field of 'expertise'. I wouldn't call this hobby a distraction. Before I got into it, I never knew how to fix a thing. If something was broken, chipped, cracked or the wrong colour, I would just sigh and toss it, or put it aside. Through magnetizing, converting and assembling models, as well as painting them, my very mindset has changed. Because of the hobby, I've fixed and repainted many things, and I feel more confident in my day-to-day life knowing I have a few handy man skills. And, as peabody said, it is a social hobby. In today's age, video gamers can now play with other people around the world, while sitting alone in their bedroom. Our hobby typically forces us to go out and socialize with people. It forces us to do more than just talk, it makes us interact with people through the game. For some socially shy people, it can extremely good for them to have to deal with compromise, winning, losing, and how it affects the other person. In short, the skills you get from this hobby do apply elsewhere in life. It's not really a distraction unless it's literally distracting you from something you should be doing.

Yes I suppose calling something that 30% of my life has been dedicated to for the last 30 years "A distraction" was not completely accurate. I think gaming has given me a great deal of pleasure and I think what I was really saying is that I am an addict that sometimes needs to step back from it and focus on other things in life - like mowing the lawn! There is a little bit of me that wishes I could get some rooms re-decorated around the house, rather than airbrushing my next set of shiny tanks!

Talking of boobs. I was actually in contact with a "pin up" retro style curvy model who is into gaming. I discussed doing some tutorial videos for Gruntz but using her as the person learning or teaching the rules but with the added benefit of her being in raunchy retro pin-up clothing. I never got the idea off the ground but might revisit it someday soon

I think that is a wonderful idea... and it makes me sad that it never got off the ground.

Yes I never really raised the subject with my wife... I think I could get it pass her though if the photography was supervised

Films/tv series and books for me. I have a few different projects on the go so anything related to the projects i'm working on.
Current ones
28mm Are Zombies Apocalypse (ATZ, NMRIH), Spy Fi (7TV) and Empire of the Dead/Victorian Horror though this may branch out into strange aeons.
15mm Aliens Vs Predator but more so the novels than the films. Don't get me wrong the films are great but I love the whole universe thats been woven about these creatures by the Stephen Perry Novels.
I have a fair few but have realised lately some new books have come out so need to pester the library to get them in for me.
Prometheus is quite interesting as it adds another race into the mix. Plus I read Steel Egg by John Shirley which has a UN type exploration team vs a Chinese corporate team racing to investigate a stranded spaceship which introduced another alien race.
