I'm looking to start sculpting again, but have never really found a decent guide on how to make molds for resin, and further, where to buy the materials for it.
Any advise/guides would be great!

The guys at Resin Addict are very helpful guys. Lots of long time modellers and professionals on there as well and all are very helpful with advise. There are also a lot of tutorials etc ranging from basic stuff right up to professional set ups. Go to the Dr Polymer -> Advisory section to start with and you may find what you want. Also, there are HEAPS of tutorials on Youtube. Can't help you with the product purchasing side of things as I am in Australia and don't know where to get stuff where you guys are... www.resinaddict.com/forum/ |

Thanks for the advise!
I talked to an old professor, he suggested gluing the model bits to a piece of sprue, then with a cup or something there in, just fill the cup with the silicon mold mix, and have the model dangle in the mix using the sprue to hold it up.around the model, after it dries, it should be good to go for multiple uses.
any thoughts on that method?

You'll have to cut the model out of the rubber. Not easy. Then you'll have to prevent the mold from slipping (remember to just made a single cut all the way around the rubber.
I'd get some Klean Clay or modeling clay. place it around the part to be cast. Still keep the sprue because that will be where you pour the resin into. Also press dimples into the clay not near the part. This will help prevent the mold from slipping while the resin is curing. Pour your rubber. After it cures and dries remove all the clay. You now have a part with half the mold around it. Now pour the other half of the rubber. Allow to cure. Pull the rubber apart and remove the original (master) part. What's left is a cavity that you our the resin into.
This is a sum up of the instructions I use. If you by rubber from the link I provided, they do include directions with their products. At least they used to. I had a thread on another forum but I can't find it. I'll dig photos out of my photobucker to help you.
