While we would all like to play with huge armies on gigantic tables that is not always possible/practical. So basically, what size of force do you play on what size of table and how do you scale it up or down?

Well I normally use my 6x4ft table which is great because it allows some build up to the battle with manoeuvres. Due to the high mobility of some VTOL's and grav bikes you can have some fun pushing for objectives across the full board which can disadvantage a slower moving force. This makes players think about placement and is great across the full board sized 6x4 board. You could also use a large force - perhaps up to 12 vehicles + 8 other units on each side. You could have more but it would be a long game.
However I am making smaller 3x3 boards for Salute which allow for immediate action and smaller forces of perhaps up to 4 vehicles per side and perhaps a total of 12 units to activate for each side (at the top end). If you set the game up correctly you could have a fun session on the smaller board and run the game faster because there is minimal moving around time before fire commences.
Perhaps 4x4 is a better compromise if you have minimal space because you have a bit more room but still a close in game to get things moving quickly. You also have scope for more units because on 3x3 you will be only fielding a limited force.

I agree with what Robin has said but points wise anything from 150 to about 350 points

I am currently toying with gaming gruntz at 10mm scale, as it gives a proper feel(to me) . was just setting up a 500 vs 500 game last nite on a 4 by 6 table and used all measurements staight out of rules. it felt right, I like a bigger area for manuever.

One of the reasons I play Sci-fi games is the extra manouverability that you get with the different forms of transport available. We usually play 300pts, on a 6' x 4' table

I think 6x4 is the ideal for game with room to complete manoeuvres. I am building smaller 3x3 setups for Salute but just to allow the action to kick off immediately, reducing the game time whilst at a show and for quicker, smaller games.
