Stephen Donaldson is famous for his Chronicles of Thomas Convenant novels "The White Gold Wielder" which were an interesting set of fantasy novels and hard hitting in a genre where some fantasy can be a little soft. The Gap series is a set of sci-fi novels with some amazing characters which are pulled through a series of interesting encounters, trades and battles with an alien race which has an uneasy relationship with humankind. The first novel in the series is very short, so perfect as an introduction to the set. This sort of "no punches pulled" novel is exactly what I love to read and inspires me when gaming. www.amazon.co.uk/Gap-1-Real-Story/dp/000647019X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311928378&sr=8-1

I'm on the second (main) book of the Gap cycle and loving it. I'm sure the grim treatment of characters won't be for everyone, but it feels somewhat realistic and I really like the treatment of gravity in spaceflight.
Slight spoiler - I like the dimensional travel too, makes a good deal of sense.

Grant, yes the space battles are stunning and you feel some of the limitations of the kit with the hard acceleration requirements. Gap sickness is also interesting when they final jump into "Gap Drive". I am trying to remember if the Gap series is the one with Warden Dios? Great character.

Yep, it has Warden Dios but he hasn't really been in it much in the first book (plus the short intro book). I suspect things are about to kick off in the second book.
