Hello there, I am curious as to why the Gruntz game has been made "scale specific" to 15mm. I understand that many people play the game in 15mm, but surely by making it exclusive to one particular scale the author is cutting out a large potential market for the rules. There are many ex 40k players out there, not to mention players with collections from other manufacturers such as pig iron etc. Lots of games these days are not scale specific in the way gruntz seems to be, many historical games can be played with any scale, such as Hal Caesar, Impetus, black powder etc etc.... To make the game less scale specific would be easy to do I think, where the measurement is listed, just call it something ease such as a "U" or whatever. Taking the "U" as an example, for 15mm a "U" could be an inch, in 6mm it could be a CM, or in 28mm it could be 2 inches. That way there would be no need to re-do unit stats etc... Like I said, just curious Steve

Hi Steve I personally think it was there was all these new figures and no dedicated 15mm rules to go with them But only Robin can answer that one totally, but as 28mm gaming goes see this link gruntz15.proboards.com/thread/547Cheers Matt

Hi Matt,
I have had a read through of that thread, and what was being suggested was pretty much a re-write to make it compatible with 28mm... There is a good chance im going with 15mm anyway, but I was just curious as to why the rules are dedicated 15mm. So my question was really why exclude all the 28mm and 6mm or even 10mm players out there?
Im not a businessman, im a soldier, but to me it makes no sense to make your product exclusive to a small number of players, rather than opening it up to all. Wargaming is a niche hoppy, why cut off a large part of it?
Anyway, im waffling

We play ith 28mm no problems with the following:
1. X2 range = -2, x3 range = -3, and so on 2. AE weapons diameter = radius 3. 6' x 4' board
Everything else left as is. Works a treat.
BTW we use 28mm OOP AT-43 figures.
See this forum's card section and AAR for examples of game play,
Cheers
Mark

Grin - there seems to be a real generational disconnect here. They are rules not the 10 commandments - especially when it comes to figures and "scale". Don't like something - hack away at it until it does what you want it to do.
Anyone with any knowledge of how real weapons work will know all the stats are fudged - Artillery in particular has been scaled way back and pistols shouldn't be good for anything over an inch let alone the 5 given to a zip gun. So let's agree we are not dealing with reality here.
15mm gives a reasonably looking compromise between weapon range, figure size and table size. You have enough room to engage in maneuver on a 4x6 table and with out the figures looking like they are shooting at punching range. To better reflect reality, I suspect 6mm figures would be closer to the "actual" ground scale.
As fourpipers suggests upping the ranges will look better for 28mm figures. I would do the same - double it and get on with the game. But you could just as easily play with 28mm figures using 15mm ranges which would give more of a 40k feel.
Now if I had easy access to a football field / soccer pitch / basket ball court and a very fat wallet, I would hack up some Tamiya 1/35 kits, triple or quadruple all the ranges and really go to town.

My apologies yorkie - I tend to get a bit evangelistic. Too often I have heard: Us old guys tend to go "Nooooo - that's not the way it works, use your FoW kit, no one will care if you use Battlefront with different rules - honest."

No worries patg. For the record though, im no young un myself, unless you count being over 40 as a young un that is! I also very much understand how weapon ranges on the tabletop dont reflect reality, ive been in the infantry for the past 19 years! As a side note wargame tactics etc dont really reflect what happens in reality either, but thats something I dont mind too much as its a game. Anyway, its interesting you brought up using different scales for CoC and Bolt Action, heres a link to my 15mm Bolt Action forces! - stevenkelly1.blogspot.com/p/bolt-action.htmlI also play Black powder in 6mm. - stevenkelly1.blogspot.com/p/napoleonic.htmlSteve

Nice posts - consider yourself followed. I'm 52 this year, and ex-infantry - If it ain't infantry - it's support CoC in 28mm and 20mm and I am trying to rope in my main Gruntz opponent using his 15mm FoW kit. Ancients (DBx) in 15mm and 6mm on the 60mm wide bases used for 25mm figures and finally Saga with single based 6mm figures and reduced ground scale to play when camping. VSF/Colonials/IHMN I only have in 25mm with some newer figures in 28mm - and of course Aeronef in 1/1200 and Sky Galleons of Mars in 1/700. Gruntz is in 15mm though some of my figures are old Martian Metals and Traveller so more like 10mm. Remember the good old days when it was Airfix or nothing? Pat

The main motive for bringing up the other scales question was because I recently painted up these guys from pig Iron, and im looking for a decent set of rules for them! There are more pics and detail on my blog, here - stevenkelly1.blogspot.com/p/tomorrows-war.htmlI just need some opponents for them now. Either that or I sell them and with the funds get some nice shiney 15mm stuff instead. EDIT - patg, I have fond memories of my bendy plastic Roman legions and ill never forget the smell of the old enamel paints! Steve
