I've been a wargamer for a short time - about a year and a half.
I started with Full Thrust, then Gruntz, then Dreadball, and then a lot of games.
In the beginning, I had trouble finding players. Not a lot of people play Full Thrust or Gruntz. It's a huge ocean of 40K and Warmachine out there.
Through Dreadball, I started to find like minds (meaning people who play non-mainstream games). That led to SAGA, then Deadzone. There is a new and thriving Deadzone group here now (here being San Diego, CA, USA).
Recently, one of my Deadzone friends asked me about Gruntz. I'm afraid I gushed. A lot. I may have talked for a full 30 minutes. Anyway, it worked. He ordered a "not-Alien" army from Khurasan, and we are playing a learning game later this week with the minis I already have.
In addition to this, our very own Mister Harold is demoing Gruntz at Gamex in LA in late May. I will be there and I look forward to meeting him in person and playing several games with him.
So, in the next few weeks, I am scheduled to play more games of Gruntz than I have played ever in my life up to now.
TL;DR: I was full into Gruntz for a while, and the lack of players in my area moved me to other games. Playing those other games led me to meeting more alternative minded players. Now those players are asking me about Gruntz. Full circle.

To follow up: At Gamex, I played Gruntz with Mr. Harold. Then my friend Corey played with Mr Harold also. Then Corey bought a bunch of minis from Mr Harold. A few weeks later, Corey and I played a game of Gruntz at a house party game night, and met another Gruntz Player from OC. (that's Orange County - about a hour drive north of San Diego) Then, last week, I casually mention Gruntz to a guy I play Battletech with, and the next thing I know he bought a platoon plus a air attack drone from Kurasan. So it looks like we have 4 players in San Diego, plus a few in the greater LA area. The low cost of entry is definitely a big factor. These friends of mine play a lot of different games, so $30 for a platoon and $20 for rules is next to nothing. The videos help a lot, too. Throw in the fact the the local game store has 15mm terrain (meant for Flames Of War) for us to use, and it's an easy sell.
