Hi All,
My little Gruntz have been bugging me to make a Space Hulk type board for some Gruntz action or base attacks, etc. I found some thin plywood and cut out a dozen 12"x12" squares. A little sanding and primer and all they needed were walls. I took a piece of 2" thick pink foam and 30 minutes later, on the wire cutter, had about 50 24" long walls, about 3/16" thick (sorry, no metric for you guys with the funny accents). I made up a total of six.
2.5 hours of hot glue and some H2O (foam safe) paint and we have the start of some geomorphic layouts. I created four more the next night so we have a flat 3'x3' or the ability to stack levels and represent stairs or elevators. We still have a bit more painting but about 5 hours for something that we can play on, and cheap, sounds good to me.
Our first game was two forces (Gruntz only) searching a base for technology. Each side had three 6-7 man squads. You had to enter a room to check it and in doing so flipped a counter over. The counters were randomly placed and had numbers between 0 and 3 for the quantity of 'bad guys' present. One counter also had a symbol for the tech everyone was searching for. When one side found the tech, alarms went off and all the counters were flipped. Bad guys came pouring out of rooms and it was a grand slaughter. I think my son finally decided that finding the tech and becoming the center of attention wasn't so great after all. He eventually made it back off the base though and called it a well earned victory.
Enjoy!
