I put together an Assault Walker statblock for this AT-43 model and ran it last night. The Phased Missiles hit on double six, then rolled damage as double six, vaporizing an Imperator Mech (the Gruntz one from the rulebook). We discussed how OP the phased missiles seemed to be, then noting that the heavy vehicle missile launcher was one point cheaper and only lost the bypass shields ability. At that point the only model on my opponent's side really capable of damaging this was gone in one explosion and although it didn't really do anything else during the game it turned the tide. 300 point game, just kill mission. So thoughts, is this sort of build overpowered or do you folks use building conventions among your play groups (no superheavies, no esoterica, etc)?

That does seem pretty powerful, but luck is on your side sometimes!
The point system does require "reasonableness" to make armies that won't just steam roll over everyone. I usually discuss with my opponent why type of troops and vehicles i'm taking, since it's no fun when you can't even hurt my guys, of vice versa!

Yeah. We're still figuring out how the builds affect things so I tossed that together without much forethought...what's scary for the phase missiles are 1 point more expensive than heavy vehicle missiles for the exact same stats, just no shield bypassing ability.
We've already started talking about not how to limit everything, but how to balance matches out (like 'hey, this game nothing bigger than mediums) and whatnot. We're pretty much banning the esoteric tek for now (but see the missile comment above for how that's not a huge deterrent).

Yeah, I agree... unless you're doing a scenario you want to make sure forces can at least dish out the same type of damage.
I've found that scenarios really help to even stuff out, since it provides a different goal than just blowing the other guy up.

To put this in perspective, here is the Imperator build I ran during that game: Those Phased Missiles (or the Heavy Missiles minus the shield bypass for one less point) are doing 22 based damage (20 damage +2 for AP). With my Soak of 16 that is 2D6+6 damage. Assuming an average roll, that is 12 points of damage on a mecha that can take a maximum of 16. If you fired and hit with say your medium projectile weapon, it was still dead in one turn, but was pretty much dead by turn two. As you said, we discussed coordinating what we're bringing to help balance it out since straight points don't really balance it out.

We have been using our large collection of 28mm AT-43 miniatures (now long out of production but still available on ebay) using Gruntz 15mm rules.
