In our last game, Dr Hott Returns: gruntz15.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=aar&thread=1143&page=1, aliens of the Chamax Horde had captured scientists from Redemption City University. A squad of Guardians of the Revolution (GoR) rescued some of the scientists but the rest were taken away in a shuttle. Desperate not to lose these fine minds and allow the spread of the Chamax menace, the GoR commander had university engineers upgrade one of the local emergency vehicles to full anti-grav capabilities and set off in pursuit of the shuttle with a fireteam of Bughunters.
The shuttle headed hundreds of miles south toward a group of farms allied to, but independent from, the main Anarcho-Communist Collective. Within two days, the bugs had infected or mesmerised all the staff of Campbell's Farm and grown a new Queen. The GoR commander, running low on fuel and unable to pinpoint the location of the shuttle, was about to abandon the search. It was then that he was contacted by one of the farms: "Commander, this is Farmer Ladbrook. Our neighbours are behaving... strangely. We have set our nano-facturers to Militia Protocol and will join you at Campbell's."
The scientists are held in the building top-left of this image. Each turn, the Chamax make a skill test to extract more knowledge from them to aid the Chamax evolution. The GoR's emergency vehicle ran out of fuel (right) just behind the crashed shuttle (centre). At the bottom of the image, Ladbrook's men have gathered with Militia Protocol BTR-60s and AK-47s (for background reasons that are too long to explain here).
The BTRs move up, one of them eliminating a unit of mesmerised farmers from a rooftop. In the distance, Chamax are also advancing toward the humans.
Bravado gets the better of Ladbrook's men who race their APC up the road to save the scientists. The vehicle is destroyed by a brood of Chamax. As the survivors bail from the wrecked vehicle, a second brood runs in and tears them apart!
Meanwhile, on the right flank, the GoR commander targets Chamax that are skulking behind a wall. He doesn't finish them off and a couple of the monsters run at him with their claws raised for fight.
This gives the Bughunters an opportunity to advance with their flamers and finish off a brood which appeared from a bug-hole...
...but a counter assault from yet another brood wipes out the entire unit. This brood doesn't pause to feed. It runs on and bolsters the assault on the GoR commander.
The more cautious of the BTRs still comes under attack from a brood that had been advancing behind buildings on the left flank. More hypnotised farm-hands shoot at a unit of Ladbrook's militia...the remaining man runs in terror (bottom right).
As the BTR shreds its attackers the GoR commander's inspiring words lead the terrified shepherd, Goldstein, to return to the fight and fend off another attack on the APC.
As the BTR withdraws from danger, the besieged GoR commander spots an opportunity and tells the crew to open fire on his position! Miraculously, the commander is unscathed but his attackers are destroyed.
With no BTR to attack, these Chamax run at some soft human flesh. Coupled with fire from mesmerised shepherds (out of shot) this unit is reduced in size. Goldstein (seen on the left), opens fire and kills both the aliens...
...but watches as the rest of the unit are targeted by a single alien that had been in hiding.
With the nearby unit reduced to just one man, Goldstein charges the monster and kills it with his bare hands.
This significant display of bravery is moot. At the other side of the farm, intelligence is being sapped from the scientists. As the GoR commander runs forth to save them, the Chamax Queen appears! Kicking farm vehicles aside as if they were (Matchbox) toys, she bears down on the commander.
At this point, she and a single Chamax drone are the only aliens left. In order to preserve her colony, she uses her hive-mind to store the collected data in this last drone and instructs it to flee the farm. In a final act of sacrifice, the GoR commander breaks off his fight and searches in the distance for the escaping creature. He fails to shoot it and seconds later the Queen takes advantage of his distraction and pierces his battlesuit.
As the Queen gloats over the broken Guardian's body a new hero, Goldstein, appears and finishes the beast with his machine gun!
So, our story ends with just one alien on the run. Despite managing to leech many scientific disciplines from the University egg-heads, this one drone can only carry so much data. Before the next game, we shall randomly choose a branch of science that will determine how the Chamax Horde evolves. Though the commander died, his cortical stack remained, holding his personality. Goldstein retrieved this and, as a reward, the Guardian gives him designs for the nano-facture of battlesuits such as his own. With these suits, Goldstein goes forms his own mercenary band, sworn to protect the independent free holders of the area. I'm sure we'll see Goldstein's Flock at some point in the future.
