I am thinking about getting into 15mm games. I like the look of some of the miniatures and gruntz seems to have some nice rules allowing for a wide variety of unit types. From what I have read from the net so far, Gruntz is a skirmish level game. Can you play larger games with it? If I wanted to play large scale battles, is that possible?

Short answer: As big as you want.
Long answer: As big as you want.
I would recommend a turn limit if doing HUGE games, but if you want a full slaughter fest go for it. Like any game, it speeds up the better you know the rules, but unlike Warhammer, you don't really need to worry about mass amounts of charts so it saves time there...
But really the more I think about it, you're asking the question so you've already decided that's what you want so go for it. the rules really don't restrict you from having huge armies by any means, it really just comes down to that time thing in that; do you have the time for huge games? If the answer is yes, you're in for a real treat.

I had another pretty slow game on Sat at 200pts, 10 units versus 12. I use a fair amount of simplifications and know the rules pretty well. I think just the amount of die rolling, matching pairs of dice and counting of required scores especially if you use a wide variety of troops all take time. I do often feel games should have been faster for the amount of stuff involved. The counter side is players often pause to make the many tactical decisions which happen in every game which is a good thing.

My experience is an hour per 100 points... of course that doesn't necessarily scale up, but should give an approximate frame of reference.

Mr. Harolds assessment is spot on in our group's experience, at least in the 100-300 point range. Sadly, we haven't played anything much bigger, yet.
I would also add that the platoon level activation advocated by Tim (in his Blog I think) is definitely a great suggestion for big games. I suppose a definition of BIG is in order.
I think of that as multiple platoons of gruntz and vehicles per side. Maybe a platoon is 3-5 squads or 3-5 vehicles.
