Just an observation about The Miniatures Page (TMP). I noticed in the last 2 years that in the forum areas there are an increasing number of trolls. They are an interesting breed of trolls though because they use snobbery and clever argument to undermine posters, rather than all out hating / flaming.
You might find yourself reading an enthusiastic post by someone about a new model, to then find someone responding about the way they posted rather than the subject at hand and I am sick of it.
You all know the kind of thing where you ask yourself - "If you have nothing nice or constructive to say, why has this person wasted time responding just to make a conceited little soap box comment"
I increasingly find myself landing on what looks like an interesting subject to find that 3 or 4 of responses are derisive, express contempt, are occasionally spiteful and always unhelpful. Anyone else here find TMP forums a bit trolly or am I being too sensitive?
I don't want to give up on TMP, it is occasionally a good resource. There are other things that bother me though like the news thread on the home page. They now only feature industry news from paying advertisers, so you won't ever find news there apart from paid-for news. This is terrible and I don't think most people realise that it is only paid ads, but I now ignore all the homepage posts and head direct to the forums. This I also often resist for long periods due to the trolling. Just recently I got interested again but stumbled on two or three active conversations this week which made me regret getting involved again.

TMP stopped being a good resource about 5 years ago....at best it is a marginal resource best looked at when you can't find anything more interesting to look at.

I definitely agree. TMP is quickly becoming a waste of time for me. I have completely stopped visiting the historical forums because of all the pretentious boobs that frequent them. As you can see I don't post a lot to forums. I mostly lurk and read what catches my eye. I wasn't aware that the News was only from paying advertisers. It explains why there is a lot less information about new things and just the same stories over and over.
regards, Bill

I enjoy TMP... but I mostly stick to the 15mm sci-fi forum which isn't too bad. There are the occasional people that don't contribute or actively criticize without suggestion, but I can see what you're saying.
I think it's a shame that only advertisers can place hobby news.

I'm used to Reddit, so TMP is VERY civil in comparison.

There's the odd snide post but generally I don't have a problem. Anyone that asks for advice in choosing rules or figures seem to get useful responses.

There's idiots everywhere. I think TMP attracts a higher than average ratio of prima donnas, though. I've noticed a lot of "Why can't the haters just shut up and go away" threads when the "hating" has been genuine criticism. You can't seem to criticise certain games without being labelled a hater - a pejorative I find most distasteful.
There are trolls, of course, and plenty of deliberately confrontational posts, and plenty of argumentative posters willing to jump on the bandwagon. But what's the alternative? Frothers? If you think TMP is bad....

I stilfe and actually I don't get much abuse myself. I just stumble into what looks like something worth reading and then discover many posts in the responses are just someone picking on a point and being negative. Then I realise I am really wasting my time.
I am not a person to explode and say "Thats it I am never coming back here again!". So I will just keep a happy distance and occasionally pop in. You can't deny it is useful as a key place for traffic if you want to share something.

I very occasionally paste on Frothers - I like it but found it difficult to get into the community. I feel like it is a close-knit bunch of gaming buddies on there. Not so easy to come in fresh.

Frothers is massively cliquey, and I have seen, on occasion, bullying, vile, personal attacks and insulting posts on there that Bill on TMP would obliterate with the ban-hammer that were left to run and run on Frothers, and that really put me off. Granted, it was quite a while ago and the community may have changed, but mud sticks.

On the other hand i've seen all the exact same behaviors on TMP and seen the people complaining about it get dawghoused by the editor...I know which I prefer.

I find the crowd on TMP to be a bit tiring, lots of people that complain simply for the sake of heairng their own voices, plus the constant "too expensive" comments. They'd likely complain on the price of something being given away for free. When you are running a small miniatures company that can barely keep it's doors open it's really discouraging to constantly have people badgering about prices. While there's an occasional thread on there that is helpful typically I don't find TMP to be of much use.
