Since I'm getting zero response from BGG, I'll post my question here:
Can the damage track be modified in any way? Or is it set in stone like a template? Say, I want a mech or tank to be able to take 50 damage. Are there rules for this? Any help would be appreciated.

The damage is set by the unit size, check the unit builder section of the rulebook.

Gruntz [individual troopers] (with some exceptions) take one point of damage and are considered KIA (unless a medic is around).
Vehicles can range from motorbikes (that might take 4 damage) to super-heavy tanks that can take upwards to 50+ damage.

Thanks for the responses. I don't have the rulebook, which is why I asked. Wanted to know before I make a purchase.
So if I wanted to create a unit that was of a given size, say a motorbike, but I wanted it to have an abnormally large damage track, is it possible to modify the motorbike this way?

For vehicles you can specify the class of the unit, scout, light, medium, heavy and assault. That sets some base stats like guard, soak and the damage track. There's no real reason you couldn't have a motorbike as an assault class unit if you wanted to, but the bigger the unit, the lower the guard.
On the other hand, potentially a better option, though, is to make it a vehicle specialist. These choose their stats like standard Gruntz units, but you can then choose a damage track for them from the scout to assault. Scouts have small damage tracks, Assault has larger. The damage tracks aren't nearly as big as an equivalent vehicle, but then they are supposed to be sub-vehicle sized units.

Thanks GJD. Your explanation makes it clearer to me. The ability to modify the damage track is crucial to some scenarios I've designed and they would have to be modified, but I just wasn't sure Gruntz possessed that flexibility I needed.
