I know some people love just playing with their latest purchases and that is fine. The following is for people who hanker after army list building and a way to play balanced forces to a set points limit. The GFS really allows you to field anything you want except high numbers of high stats gruntz units. You can still field high stat Gruntz units but they tend to be a small number of models in the unit. If you do generally like to play high stat games you may well want to change the points limits mentioned. I admit it is a shameless steal from another well know skirmish game and there is a very good guide to setting up a battlefield and determining a winner available as a free download available from the same company. To convert from 28mm use 2/3 of the measurements mentioned, eg 8 inches becomes 6.
Gruntz Force Selector
When using the GFS all units are selected as part of a platoon. A platoon consists of up to eleven core and support units as detailed below. An army can consist of as many platoons as a player wishes as long as all compulsory elements are chosen and the games agreed points limit is not exceeded.
Slot Number Description Notes and restrictions.
1 Command A commander is compulsory for the first platoon chosen and a sub commander for every platoon there after.
2 Core Gruntz Squad 1 A Gruntz squad costing 20 points or less. This slot is a compulsory choice for all platoons fielded.
3 Core Gruntz Squad 2 A Gruntz squad costing a maximum of 20 points. This is slot must be filled before fielding another platoon.
4 Core Gruntz Squad 3 A Gruntz squad costing 20 points or less. This is slot must be filled before fielding another platoon.
5 Integral Transport Air or Ground Support Vehicles providing up to 4 transport slots.
6 Elite Support 1 A Gruntz squad costing a maximum of 25 points
7 Elite Support 2 A Gruntz squad, unlimited points value.
8 Gruntz Specialist 1 model costing 21 points or more. 1-3 models costing up to a maximum of 20 points each.
9 Vehicle Specialist 1 model costing 21 points or more. 1-3 models costing up to a maximum of 20 points each.
10 Heavy Support 1 1-2 Scout or light sized Ground Support Vehicles, Tanks or Monsters. 1 model of a larger class size.
11 Heavy Support 2 1-2 Scout or light sized Mechs, or air support. 1 model of a larger class size.
Gruntz Army Defeat Chart
In an effort to stop games dragging on until every last unit has been wiped out I would suggest using the following chart. Gruntz specialists and vehicle specialists costing 20 points are less only count as one unit for every three specialists or part of three. For example four specialists would count as two units and three specialists as one unit. When units are required to take a waiver test they must roll under their mental stat or enter condition brown. Vehicles may use the commanders mental stat if there is one. The commander does not have to be in command radius. If there is currently no commander vehicles must roll 7 or less not to move towards the nearest table edge. This move must not take them closer to enemy. If the unit moves off table it is removed from the game. When an army has the required number of units in condition brown or destroyed it is considered defeated and the game ends immediately.
Number of Starting Units Waiver test on activation when this number of units are destroyed or in condition brown. Army is defeated when this number of units are destroyed or in condition brown.
