Hi,
Here's my take on a gaming table. It's 3'x4' and I'm planning to make another one so they can be combined to a 6'x4' board with an airbase theme. I have some plans for the buildings but I haven't started building those yet. There's also some painted CMG ARC Fleet troops for size comparison.
First some step by step photos from the building phase. I started with a foamcore base glued to a wooden frame. I started building the terrain shapes on that as this is sort of more for looks than maximum customization and variable playing fields. The hill is carved from 1" foam board pieces. The larger flatter shapes are foamcore. I filled gaps with polyurethane.
Base materials and colours applied. First I applied watered down white glue with a huge brush to the table, then I sprinkled on some sand, sawdust and kitty litter. I painted these with a household spray bottle and diluted paint. It gives a fairly quick and good coverage.
After this I took out my GW flamer and airbrush and started the real painting. I applied various earth tones some diluted to wash-like consistency to just filter in some different shades and to create deeper shadows on to the table.
A few more paint layers later I glued some different greenish coloured WS Fine Turf on the table to give a look of some living grass, moss etc.
And now I made some trees and have painted one army too:
The trees are made from WS armatures with various flocking and turf materials. First bend the armature to shape, apply some paint to the trunk, glue polyfiber on the tree, then apply spray glue and pour on the flocks. Simple, fast and effective. And quite cheap too. There's quite a lot more of these trees but I decided not to fill the whole board with these
Sorry for the less than stellar picture quality and colour balance. The weather outside was quite nice and there was a little too much light pouring in from the window for my camera.
