Pick up some tulle from your local haberdashery merchant. Comes in various mesh patterns and sizes. Usually sold by the metre so you will end up with enough for a lifetime for under a tenner.

For electrical wire/barbed wire, Take some pipe cleaners, and while holding one end with a set of needle nose pliers, use a lighter to burn away the fibers. Wrap in around a pencil then carefully pull it apart. Paint it, clear coat it, and boom. Also works well for thick metal cable/28mm rope/wires.

What is tulle? What is haberdashery?

Tulle is a type of material used for bridal veils etc. A haberdasher sells material and needlework supplies.

Thanks for the tip Blood. Not sure we have Home Depot in UK but i expect i can find an equivalent that will do just as well. Would be well worth doing a blog I think.

Check B&Q in the kitchen section for a roll of a black mesh that is used for the gaps above or below kitchen cupboards, made of plastic I believe.
Failing that they also sell sheets of mesh near the cupboard hinges/fittings section.

The metal mesh in B&Q is steel, I believe and a bit pricy, but Halfords do aluminium car body mesh that can be used for all sorts of things - it's ideal for security fencing and is fairly cheap at about £1 for an A4ish sheet. You can also cut along the diagonal into long strips to get fantastic, if fragile, barbed wire with actual barbs.
