I'm new to Gruntz and while working out what to order from GZG, I stumbled on these great diecast vehicles from my local $2 shop. I picked up one with the intention of using it for a security vehicle. A bit of a search on the web showed a few others with similar ideas. I decided to 'sci-fi' it up a bit by adding a few panels/tanks as well as a scratch-built, 'GZG style' missile launcher.
The conversion was a bugger (46 parts or so just for the launcher) but a lot of fun so I decided to buy a few more and try for some more conversions. This one was built for my engineer, with the crane based off an Old Crow design. It's not completely finished yet.
Forever getting distracted, rather than finish the recovery vehicle, I thought I'd try a couple of AT vehicles. The guns are again based off GZG ones used on their hover vehicles. These aren't finished yet either.
This vehicle will represent my command vehicle but I'm stuck for the moment on what else to add. I'll probably build a box structure to increase the hight of the roof and plenty of storage bins etc.
It's a slow way to put an army together but fun. Might try my hand at the basic APCs next.
Loving these!!! Nice to see those work in progress pictures too, most people only think about taking pictures after they have finished their projects leaving us to guess how they did it. With all the fantastic models that are out there these days scrachbuilding is an often overlooked part of the hobby, which is a shame as it can be really fun and rewarding. I look forward too seeing where you go with these, any idea which troops you're going to use with them?
Thanks guys. I picked up the NAC troops from GZG. Nice figures with plenty of variety. I ended up converting some of the SAWs so they's stand out more and I'll post pics of these when they're finished. My plan so far is to have a command vehicle, recovery, 3-4 APCs, 2 AT vehicles and possibly an ambulance. Once I get these done I can get stuck into my infantry. I have been thinking about getting a couple of tracked tanks to use as heavier AT. Having read the Hammer's Slammers books, I see them as a merc force, maybe with not the most advanced equipment but well trained and led.
Grabbed a couple of these from Kmart today (Matchbox Oshkosh M-ATV $2.60?), thought they'd make good Light (recon) vehicles. Shouldn't have to do too much to them other than add a weapon and half a gunner.

Finished building the AT vehicles and command vehicle last night. Gave them a quick airbrush with Vallejo Brown Violet before I got carried away by the mosquitoes. I'm tempted to build a trailer for the command vehicle and mount a AA rocket launcher on top.
Will build the 3 actual APCs next and possibly redo the arty vehicle, as it was the first one I constructed.
Started work on my APCs tonight or at least the weapon system mounted on top.
Unfortunately most of the photos I took during construction are way too grainy to be of much use - the problem with doing this sort of work at night. I've included a couple of crappy shots of the actual weapon mount all the same. The rest of the build was fairly straightforward, so hopefully you can see how it was done if you look closely (the bottom base is a small button). I'll aim to take better photos next build.
