I think this needs some work and deep thought
. Given that in the SCI-FI world we might have grav technology which would give a large ground attack plane amazing agility, acceleration, instant hover and even morphing tech to adapt to hover or ground hugging mode - or mecha mode. In this technology environment we might be able to blast at supersonic speed across a battlefield and then rapidly decelerate, tearing the sound barrier apart as the vehicle spots a target and slows to a halt using the cover of a gully.
However for gameplay it would be fair to assume some limitations of being in "Flight Mode" which would make movement restricted in a turn to very straight lines across large areas of board.
It potentially links with off-board artillery in the sense that it is heavy incoming fire from something which could be high altitude or off-board and therefore difficult to target but with some rules requirement to avoid it being too powerful and a game killer.
I think an "aircraft" or orbit to atmosphere attack vehicle moving at full-flight-speed should use some sort of abstract attack method using a template and some rolls for targeting. It should also be expensive points wise because a sci-fi / modern system could be devastating.
It is a difficult one to balance but so far I think to make a start on fast flight rules I need to categorise different flight modes and options first and then build some rules to support the different environments and weapons which are fair, not overpowered but still realistic enough to be fun and simple to learn and play.
Please feel free to comment on these ideas:
Attack Aircraft rules framework categories:
Speeds:
Stationary
hover mode - (30-200mph)
full-flight (200-600mph)
super sonic - Anything over Mach 1 through to Mach 2+
Altitudes:
orbit
high altitude
low altitude (or nape of the earth)
On Ground
Weapons:
Big Bombs - Bang everything on the board is blasted into oblivion.
Planet Buster - You have 1 hour to get off the planet it is going to implode.
Missile - I think these would work as anti-vehicle missiles e.g. multi-role with intelligence in them to be for the purposes of shooting at other aircraft or slower moving hard ground targets. They would auto-reconfigure themselves for the different tasks at hand. They might also work as bunker busters.
Cluster Anti Infantry (laser / plasma / frag)
Drone launchers - Launch smaller attack drones which act independently.
Point attack heavy calibre machine gun or equivalent laser/plasma rapid fire small area attack.
Counters for aircraft include:
Flak - rail gun rapid fire targeted types or explosive frag.
Ground to air missile
Other aircraft with missiles
Some sort of ultrasonic intelligent drone which limpets onto the target before exploding or damaging other systems/aerodynamics.
Normal ground vehicles firing auto-fire type weapons. Some sort of penalty would need to apply because they would not be ideally suited to firing at super fast targets.
I actually have a couple of very nice 1/100th sci-fi aircraft at home which this is now getting me itching to finish, so I can field test them!
